History

Star Distribution Systems, Inc. was established in 1892 as a food brokerage sales company (Bonacker Brothers, Inc.) in Tampa, Florida by W.A. Bonacker and F.C. Bowyer. The firm moved locations in 1912 to downtown Tampa where it remained for 51 years serving a 23-county area. The company brokered food items and grocery store specialties to wholesalers and to large grocery chains and quickly became the largest brokerage in the Southeastern United States.

In 1925 two brothers, Ferdie V. Jimenez and Gus Jimenez, joined the company and worked their way up from local couriers to top sales executives of the company. The Jimenez brothers purchased the company from the Goodrich family in 1948 and within a few short years, the company hit record sales and grew to 34 employees.

In April 1964, the company relocated to a custom built 41,000 square foot building at the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Industrial Park, located in North Tampa. This new facility was twice the size of the downtown Tampa location and allowed the company to greatly expand its non-perishable food business.

Early Innovations Attract Leading Brands

In the early years, as Florida’s population was growing, the company stayed ahead of the competition by providing nimble, small inventory warehousing and distribution that enabled customers to eliminate lengthy transit times for product roll-outs and trade show events.

Some of the first customers to take advantage of these innovative logistics included leading brands such as Stokley Van Camp, King Oscar Seafood, Bumble Bee Foods, C.A. Swanson & Son, Sevilla Olive Packing Company, Hawaiian Punch, Clorox, Uncle Ben’s Rice and PET Foods.

A Star is Born

In 1980, the company sold the food brokerage business and the Bonacker Brothers name. The Jimenez Family changed the company’s name to Tampa Bay Warehouse Company and immediately embarked on an aggressive strategy of acquiring its competitors. In February of 1985, the company merged with Star Terminal & Warehouse Company – lead by David Mattioli – to form Star Distribution Systems, Inc. and Star Transportation Company, which along with its private fleet of trucks and drivers helped to effectively position the consolidated company as Florida’s Premier 3rd Party Logistics Provider.

Your Single-Source Solution for Florida 3PL

In the mid-80s, the company consolidated 12 regional warehouses into a single 1.5 million square foot facility at the Lakeland Regional Industrial Park in Polk County. In 1995, Star relocated to its current, state-of-the-art facility in Plant City, Florida – a move focused on becoming Florida’s most nimble and reliable provider of third-party logistics services. With immediate rail and convenient interstate (I-4) access, this strategic Central Florida location allows Star to deliver quality brands to any destination in Florida quicker with greater cost efficiencies than ever before – with next day delivery on orders received before 5 PM—GUARANTEED!

Today, under the leadership of Jimenez family, Star Distribution Systems continues the relentless pursuit of supply chain excellence in the Florida market and is more motivated than ever to carry on the legacy of superior customer service established over 120 years ago.
